Reel Beginnings

chitralekha

Our Story & Legacy

Founded in 1965 in Thiruvananthapuram, inaugurated by Governor Bhagawan Sahay, Chitralekha became Kerala’s first film society. Inspired by the Bengal movement, it quickly became a cooperative under the Kerala Co-operative Societies Act, creating India’s first film production cooperative. This bold experiment produced Swayamvaram (1972), Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s debut, which won four National Awards and redefined Indian parallel cinema. Other notable productions include Kodiyettam (1978).

Chitralekha also created physical landmarks – its studio at Akkulam, designed by Laurie Baker, remains a cultural heritage site blending Kerala motifs with modernist design.

Vision
Mission

We strive to preserve Kerala’s cinematic heritage while democratizing access to world cinema. Our mission is to nurture independent voices, empower women filmmakers, and promote socially relevant storytelling. As a cooperative enterprise, we blend cultural ambition with social responsibility, using cinema as a powerful tool for education, social transformation, and cultural pride.
